In our latest episode, I delved into a topic that is rarely discussed openly - the hidden sacrifices that come with building a successful company. It's easy to look at the shiny exterior of a thriving business and be envious of the perceived success. But as I shared, the road to get there is often paved with personal sacrifices that many don't see. Things like strained marriages, fractured family relationships, lost friendships, and abandoned hobbies are all too common among entrepreneurs and business owners. As I candidly admitted, my own marriage to my wife Brittany has weathered its fair share of challenges due to the demands of running a company. The friction and stress can be immense, and it takes a tremendous amount of humility to overcome those obstacles. But I firmly believe that nothing - not even the pursuit of business success - should come at the expense of the family unit. That is a line I'm unwilling to cross. What I've realized is that true, lasting success isn't just about the bottom line. It's about maintaining your integrity, your values, and your relationships throughout the journey. The people I know who have built the biggest companies are often the ones who have also had to endure the most personal sacrifices. And I'm not envious of that - I'm in awe of their resilience and commitment. As I reflected on my own path, I recognized the blessing of having a clear purpose and orientation from a young age. Knowing that I wanted to build a landscape construction business gave me a north star to guide my decisions and efforts. But I also acknowledged the importance of stepping back to vision for the company's future, rather than just getting caught up in the day-to-day grind. One of the things I'm most proud of is the Hardscape Academy that we've built. It arose from a genuine desire to serve our community and provide comprehensive training resources that were lacking in the digital space. By focusing on that altruistic mission, we've been able to grow the Academy in a way that is truly fulfilling, both for us and for the students we reach. Ultimately, my message is a simple one: don't sacrifice your morals, your integrity, or your family on the altar of business success. It's a tempting trap to fall into, but the long-term cost is simply too high. Instead, strive to do your absolute best, make the wisest decisions you can, and never compromise your core values. That, to me, is the true path to lasting, meaningful success.
