Are You Willing to Change?

As I reflect on the topics covered on a recent episode of the Kid Contractor Podcast, the overarching theme that stands out to me is the importance of being willing to change as a business owner. Too often, we get stuck in our ways and become resistant to making the necessary adjustments to improve our companies. We complain about the problems we face, but are unwilling to put in the hard work to address them head-on. One of the articles discussed highlighted this perfectly - "I am the problem, not my customers, not my employees, not the market. I must be willing to change." That really hit home for me, as I know I've been guilty of that mindset at times. It's easy to point fingers at external factors, but the reality is that we have to look inward and be honest about where we need to improve. Whether it's getting our finances in order, revamping our sales process, investing in better equipment and training for our teams, or any number of other areas - we have to be willing to make changes. And not just surface-level changes, but real, meaningful shifts in how we operate. I know firsthand how challenging that can be. Change is hard, and it often requires us to step outside of our comfort zones. But the businesses that are able to adapt and evolve are the ones that will thrive in the long run. One of the key things I took away from this episode is the importance of setting clear goals and committing to them. The article about attending trade shows really resonated with me - the idea of going in with specific objectives and then following up with the team afterwards to discuss what was learned. That intentionality is so crucial. We have to stop just reacting to the day-to-day fires and start proactively working ON our businesses, not just IN them. That means taking the time to step back, assess where we're at, and map out a plan for improvement. It won't be easy, but I truly believe that the contractors who are willing to change and put in the hard work will be the ones who come out on top. So I challenge you, as I challenge myself - what areas of your business are you willing to change? What goals are you going to commit to, no matter what? The path forward may not be simple, but the rewards of transforming your company can be immense. Let's embrace the opportunity to grow and evolve together.
