On our latest episode of the Kid Contractor Podcast, I had the opportunity to dive into a topic that's been top of mind for me lately - the importance of elevating quality and design in our work. It's no secret that the landscaping business can be highly competitive, with clients often looking for the lowest price. But I've come to realize that prioritizing quality and thoughtful design is key to delivering exceptional results and building a sustainable, profitable business. On this episode, I sat down with my son Zeke to review some industry trade journals and discuss how we've been shifting our approach. Gone are the days of trying to simply save our clients money by cutting corners on materials and craftsmanship. Instead, we're focused on using the highest quality products, even if it means our bids may be a bit higher. The way I see it, investing in quality upfront pays dividends in the long run. Not only does it result in landscapes that stand the test of time, but it also helps us attract the type of clientele that values expertise and artistry over rock-bottom pricing. Of course, this shift hasn't been without its challenges. I shared a recent experience where we had to make some tough decisions on product selection for a complex project. In the end, we stuck to our guns and used the materials that best aligned with the overall aesthetic, even though it meant our bid was the highest of the three companies the client considered. Ultimately, the client decided to go with a lower-priced option. While it was disappointing to lose the job, I know in my heart that we made the right call. Not only does it reinforce our commitment to quality, but it also helps us attract the type of clients who truly appreciate the value we bring to the table. As I reflected on this episode with Zeke, I was reminded of the importance of maintaining that personal margin as a business leader. It's so easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. But by delegating the trivial stuff and focusing on the strategic priorities, we can ensure we have the time and mental space to continue elevating our work. So if you're a landscaper or contractor looking to take your business to the next level, I encourage you to join me in embracing quality and design. It may mean having some tough conversations with clients, but I truly believe it's the path to long-term success and satisfaction in this industry.
